Parking Woes Could Worsen
The HOA has sent a demand to bargain with the administration.
Michigan Medicine announced changes to employee parking access, stating that it wants to "mitigate" employee and patient parking challenges. These changes do nothing to help our members' parking challenges; instead, difficulty will escalate with the loss of 380 blue spaces in P4. Those spaces, heavily utilized by house officers, will all become Gold spaces, which are of course more lucrative for Michigan Medicine. Yes, patient parking access will increase; however, the only group being disadvantaged in this zero-sum game appears to be employees that cannot afford the additional $1,100 per year for Gold passes and those who are deemed ineligible to purchase Gold passes. Finally, there is no reduction in the cost of a Blue pass despite these space subtractions.
Michigan Medicine told the HOA that the changes will not affect parking protected by our union contract (Article XVIII); the HOA is skeptical. The HOA filed a demand to bargain on Saturday, March 23, over parking, forcing the administration to listen to our suggested remedies. However, they are under no obligation to agree to implement anything we suggest. We will continue to explore options with Michigan Medicine to help prevent our members and other employees from shouldering all the negative changes.
The Parking Update Open Houses planned for March 25, 27, and April 2 have been postponed and will be rescheduled for later this year. The Michigan Medicine Leadership Team has now determined that an additional period of study is warranted, which really means they are postponing implementation to bargain with the unions.
The HOA will continue to update you through News for House Officers as we progress.
