The Curbside Consultation Pathway

Best practices adopted by UMHS.

A curbside consultation may be requested by Inpatient and Emergency Medicine providers and involves a “patient independent question” which can be effectively answered, without knowing patient-specific information or personally evaluating the patient, by the consult service provider.

 Inherent to the curbside consultation process is the mutual understanding by provider and consultant on the following:

  • The patient will not be physically seen by the consultant
  • The consultant is not required to perform chart review
  • Discussion and staffing with the supervising consultant faculty member is not required
  • There will not be clinical documentation of the discussion
