An Opportunity to Give Back

Help reduce disparities that exist among medical trainees.

The First in Family at Michigan Medicine medical student group is seeking residents to help mentor small groups of first-generation, low-incoming (FGLI) medical students. FGLI students are defined as individuals who are the first in their family to complete a 4-year college degree and make up 10-12% of each class at UMMS. Unfortunately, there are a number of issues these medical students experience at a greater proportion compared to their classmates. By providing mentorship and support to these students, we can work to reduce disparities that exist among medical trainees, especially in highly competitive specialties.
