The Grand Round Up
Here is what is going on in UM Labor in April of 2026.
Below are some of the things that other labor unions at UM are working on this month:
- The Nurses of MNA-UMPNC are still negotiating with the hospital. The hospital has been fighting them on maintenance of staffing ratios and has also proposed removing the highest wage scale for APRNs. This could potentially impact the wages and working conditions for a large amount of employees. The HOA supports our nursing colleagues in the fight for a fair contract. Wear red on Wednesdays to show support. A limited number of red surgical caps are available in the HOA office for those who want to show solidarity.
- The MNA also organizing a new union at Chelsea Hospital and are facing resistance from their bosses. It is a joint Trinity and UM Health workplace and the HOA supports the nurses in their struggle for union recognition. Show support by sending an email to the management of Chelsea Hospital.
- The graduate students of GEO are still in negotiations with the University after a state-mandated pause in bargaining. Both sides are passing proposals. Research Assistants voted to accrete into the GEO bargaining unit with an overwhelming vote of 299 for and 25 against, a 92% yes vote. This adds over 2,000 more employees to the ranks of UM labor. Congratulations to the Research Assistants on their new union.
- The Physician Assistants (UPAMM), Allied Health (UMMAP), Service Employees International (SEIU), and the HOA all go to the bargaining table in January of 2027. We are looking at ways we can all work together and support one another.
