CHANGE TO POLICY: VIEWING THE MEDICAL RECORDS OF YOUR MINOR CHILD(REN) DIRECTLY IN MICHART

March 06, 2024

Starting April 1, staff members who have MiChart access will no longer be allowed to directly access (via MiChart) the medical records of their minor child(ren) at any age. This changes the current policy 03-09-001, UMH Medical Record Requirements Policy.

This change brings the health system in line with other academic medical centers and our state partners at UM Health-West and UM Health-Sparrow. Additionally, it improves the privacy of minor patients and ensures that Michigan Medicine fully complies with state and federal confidentiality laws involving the treatment of minors when they self-consent and obtain certain services (“Confidential Services”) such as for treatment of sexually transmitted diseases, substance use disorder, etc.

All employees are encouraged to sign up for proxy access to their children’s patient portal through www.myuofmhealth.org. For more information, visit the Compliance Program’s HIPAA website.
