HO3 » HO4

As the incoming President of the House Officers Association, I am deeply honored to carry forward the legacy of advocacy and action that has defined our union since its founding. For over five decades, the HOA has stood as a powerful voice for residents at Michigan Medicine—fighting for fair financial compensation, championing safe and sustainable work
environments, and pushing back against unjust labor practices.

This year, we stand at a pivotal moment. With a new partnership alongside AFT Michigan, we are poised to amplify our efforts and expand our reach. Together, we will initiate meaningful dialogue with hospital leadership and labor relations to begin shaping the changes we hope to
see reflected in our next contract. These conversations will reflect our shared commitment to the health, dignity, and professional development of every resident physician.

A key priority in the year ahead will be deepening engagement within our membership prior to our next contract negotiations in January 2027. We are stronger when every voice is heard, and every resident feels empowered to take part in our collective action. To that end, we are now holding biannual general membership meetings and actively seeking broader participation in union initiatives. We will be calling on residents to contribute their ideas, energy, and expertise to further our shared goals.

Our vision is one of collaboration, empowerment, and progress. We are not only negotiating contracts—we are shaping the future of residency training at Michigan Medicine. Together, we will continue to build a fairer, safer, and more supportive environment for all house officers.

In solidarity,

Rachael Tesorero, MD, MS

President-Elect

Haley Marber

Child Neurology
HO3 » HO4

Hello fellow House Officers! I am a rising PGY-4 in Child Neurology. Over the past two years, I have had the pleasure of representing you on the HOA Board and hope to continue supporting and advocating for you as President-Elect. While for many of us, practicing medicine may feel like a calling, it is also a job; we fundamentally deserve decency and respect in the workplace. Having had the opportunity to hear stories and experiences from residents across programs as an HOA representative, I have been astonished and deeply disappointed by the treatment of residents across programs. Through its actions, our hospital system continually shows us that it views residents as an inexpensive and easily exploitable labor force. That said, I have also been so deeply encouraged by the strength of our residents in coming forward and working with the union to fight for our rights when they have been infringed upon; it has been an immense privilege to bear witness to and participate in. Our strength is in our numbers, our openness to hearing one another’s stories, and our willingness to stand together.

I am proud of the strides we have made as a board in the past few years, and I am thrilled by the opportunities stemming from our new affiliation with AFT. I hope that as President-Elect, I can continue to work with each of you to continue fighting for our humanity and dignity to be recognized, for our contract to be upheld and improved, and for safe, secure, and appropriate working conditions. You deserve it!

Vice President

Jaclyn Mauch

Plastic Surgery
HO4 » HO5

With a background in corporate strategy at a Fortune 500 healthcare company, and experience serving as HOA Treasurer, Vice President, and a member of the negotiations team, I bring a proven track record of advocacy and leadership. As Vice President, I will continue to fight for the rights and dignity of every resident. I will help steer our union through the complex, high-stakes decisions ahead as we prepare for contract renewal. A union gives us power—but even with that power, we are still undervalued. That’s why I won’t stop pushing until we get what we deserve—and more.

Secretary

Mario Belfiglio

Anesthesiology
HO2 » HO3

As a current HOA representative, I am eager to take on a leadership role within the HOA. My past year on the HOA board has been a rewarding experience, allowing me to advocate for positive changes on behalf of my fellow residents. If elected as Secretary, I am committed to ensuring fair elections and maintaining accurate records. Looking ahead, I plan to use my next year on the board to focus on strategic planning for the next round of contract negotiations, which are set to begin in 2027.

On a personal note, my enthusiasm for serving on the HOA stems from a deep appreciation for the principles of organized labor. Growing up, I learned firsthand about the importance of unions through my parents. My mother spent her career as an attorney for the National Labor Relations Board, a federal agency dedicated to protecting the rights of employees to organize and engage in union activities. My father was also a proud union member. They taught me the importance of workers being able to advocate for themselves collectively without fear of reprisal. Being able to join a union was one of the reasons I came here for residency, and I am continually impressed by the hard work and dedication of our HOA staff and my fellow board members.

Joining the union as a member PGY-1 year was pretty much a no-brainer for me, and I am grateful to have had the opportunity to serve as a representative-at-large on the HOA board this past academic year. As I enter my fourth year of residency, I look forward to using my understanding of this health system along with my experience in navigating inter-departmental and organizational logistics to contribute to the stability of the HOA financial landscape. As we gear up for a bargaining year, I want to ensure that we are well prepared in advance. With many changes coming in the next years — including bargaining, opening the pavilion, additional staff hiring, and the greater political climate — I look to ensure that there is consistent focus on all of us as residents. I am grateful to have benefited these past few years within our union and am excited to continue to serve our current and future colleagues!

Representatives

Sonali Biswas

HO2 » HO3

Hi everyone! I am excited to run for a position as an HOA representative. During my time at UofM so far, I have felt the power of how the union protects us as workers, and believe that we owe it to ourselves and our patients to continue to strive for more. This is especially critical in the context of the institution’s recent efforts against diversity, equity, and inclusion. As a member of the board, I would be especially interested in further defining how we support our fellow residents who are underrepresented in medicine from recruitment through residency in the context of the loss of ODEI and OHEI. I am overall passionate about resident wellbeing, mental health, fair compensation, and maternity leave. To the board, I would hope to contribute my background in leadership and advocacy specifically in diversity, equity, and inclusion as a former national board member for Medical Students with Disability and Chronic Illness, chapter leader for the Association of Women Surgeons, and chair of my former institution’s student committee for DEI. Thank you for your consideration!

Monica Chavan

Interventional Radiology
HO2 » HO3

My name is Monica Chavan; I'm a rising PGY-3 in the IR/DR program, and I also completed my intern year in general surgery here at Michigan Medicine. I am currently a member of the hospital's ethics committees and am running for the 2025-2026 HOA Board because I have an interest in helping solve problems that affect residents across the institution. In my time at Michigan, I have done rotations in the ED, at UH, at Mott, in CVC, and at the VA. I have seen how diverse workflows across departments and hospital buildings create challenges for us as residents when it comes to taking after-hours call, managing interactions with support staff, and handling patient safety concerns. I am passionate about optimizing the efficiency of our workflows and finding ways to revise institutional policies so that residents can work smarter, not harder. If elected to the HOA board, my main aim will be to address changes in resident responsibilities and workloads with the upcoming opening of the Pavilion and other MM satellite sites. I believe it is important to propose solutions that will both maximize patient safety and minimize resident burnout. As an HOA board member, I promise to consistently convey your concerns to institutional leaders and advocate for policies that improve resident education and wellness.

Elise Corden

Pediatrics
HO4 » HO5

I am a first-year Pediatric Hospital Medicine Fellow and am currently completing my second year as an HOA representative. I joined the HOA Board as a third-year pediatric resident at U of M and was fortunate to stay on during my transition into fellowship. There is no doubt that resident and fellow well-being is directly correlated with the support and care that we can provide to our patients, and therefore it is crucial that the wellness of our trainees is supported. During my fellowship I have been able to spend additional time with hospital administrators to gain a more in-depth understanding of the current operations of our expanding institution. Given the demands and high expectations of trainees, I am particularly passionate about reviewing staffing models among both residents and APPs to ensure that clinical exposure and education are appropriately balanced with safe and sustainable work hours. I aim to leverage my skills honed during business school to work towards optimizing hospital efficiency and collaborating with administrators to ensure safe staffing requirements are upheld.

Aseel Haidar

Family Medicine
HO2 » HO3

My name is Aseel, and I’m a family medicine resident originally from Dearborn, MI. Over the past six months, I’ve had the privilege of serving on the HOA Board, and it’s been an incredibly rewarding experience. I’ve truly enjoyed working alongside a passionate group of resident advocates to support our collective well-being and push for meaningful improvements in our training environment.

This year, I would be honored to continue that work and represent you again. I remain deeply committed to the issues that matter most—ensuring safe working conditions, fair compensation, true work-life balance, and strong protections for residents in our interactions with administration. Residency presents ongoing emotional and physical challenges, and I’m dedicated to making sure every resident feels heard, supported, and empowered throughout the process.

Thank you for your trust and consideration—I’d be proud to continue serving this incredible community.

John Levine

Emergency Medicine
HO1 » HO2

Hello, my name is John Levine. I am running to be on the HOA board because I am committed to action that improves our well-being and protects our rights as house officers. I have been an active union member for 7 years and know that the strength of a union comes from the members. It's vital to promote an inclusive environment that works to ensure every member's voice is heard and respected. I am eager to fight the widespread mistreatment we experience as house officers. I got involved in the HOA right away, starting with the affiliation with AFT this last year. I have learned to take nothing for granted from experiences of building better working conditions on the board of the TAA at the University of Wisconsin. I look back on my last grassroots union campaign to win campus-wide paid parental leave in awe at the strength of so many brave member testimonies and our power working together to construct a campus diaper bank providing 6,000 diapers a month, amplifying the need on campus. I look forward to continuing to advocate to improve our well-being as house officers by prioritizing our health and safety, protecting our rights, and promoting better compensation/benefits. I would be honored to do so on the board.

Shreya Mandava

Otolaryngology
HO1 » HO2

My name is Shreya Mandava and I’m excited to be running for the UM HOA Board. As I near the end of intern year as a surgical resident, I’ve been reflecting on factors that have affected my quality of life this year. Our HOA-negotiated protections and benefits, ranging from a livable salary to holiday pay to protected workspace, have undoubtedly enhanced my personal well-being during this critical transition year.

I’m eager to join the HOA Board to help advocate for our residents and fellows through collective bargaining. I’ve long been committed to promoting wellness in our profession, and during medical school, served in leadership roles within student government, my state medical society, and national organizations. I view the HOA Board as a great platform to continue this work throughout residency.

Additionally, I believe it’s important for smaller surgical subspecialties such as ENT to have a voice in the HOA, especially considering the upcoming move to the Pavilion Building, which will disproportionately impact us. I’m committed to ensuring our needs and perspectives are represented.

Tricia Pendergrast

HO2 » HO3

Michigan House Officers Association. Over the last 12 months, I have learned so much from our wonderful Directors, Steve and Dom, as well as from Sam, Jacyln, and the rest of our leadership team, and look forward to continuing to develop as an advocate for my fellow House Officers in the coming year. Even though our contract does not expire until 2027, during the Board’s next term, we will begin our preparations to renegotiate our contract with the University. This is a critical time that lays the groundwork for our success in ensuring a safe learning environment, a professional workplace, fair compensation, and more during negotiations. I will use my academic interest and professional experience with science communication and social media to both ensure that this is a transparent process where all House Officers feel heard and represented as well as maintain control of the narrative surrounding contract negotiations. Let’s make sure the Reagents remember this hospital literally would not function without us. Thank you for your consideration!

Alexa Pinsky

Med-Peds
HO2 » HO3

My name is Alexa Pinsky, and I am running for re-election as a representative on the House Officers Association (HOA) board. I am a rising PGY-3 in Internal Medicine-Pediatrics. I initially joined the board last year because of the strong sense of community I experienced during my intern year and even glimpsed as a medical student here.
In my time as a board representative this past year, I've learned that the union plays a vital role in consistently advocating for the rights of house officers, both big and small, every day. I have worked—and will continue to work—to amplify resident voices in discussions about policy changes related to health equity and access for both residents and the patients we serve, as well as issues like computer access, parking, and connecting residents to reproductive health resources.

As a Med-Peds resident, I belong to a smaller program integrated into two larger programs. I believe it is crucial to ensure all voices are heard to share the positives, address the negatives, and identify areas for improvement. If re-elected, I will prioritize advocating for the voices of residents across all programs in medicine, pediatrics, med-peds, and throughout the hospital.

David Storck

Family Medicine
HO2 » HO3

Hello! I’m David, and I’m a Family Medicine Resident from Westland, Michigan. I am eager to serve as a representative on our HOA board to advocate on behalf of my fellow residents and help create a stronger, more supportive community. My commitment is rooted in ensuring fair and competitive pay for all, promoting safe and respectful work environments, and fostering conditions that support a healthier work-life balance. Specifically, I aim to increase access to affordable and reliable child care for working parents and provide resources that empower residents to thrive both personally and professionally. I believe that by listening to and representing the voices of our community, we can build a more equitable and inclusive living environment for everyone. As the heart of our hospital system, I believe residents deserve unwavering support in all aspects of work and life, and I am committed to doing all I can to advocate for all resident needs.

Faith Vietor

Internal Medicine
HO1 » HO2

As I reflect on my intern year, I understand the value of the HOA and am committed to advocating for House Officer rights and residents’ well-being. As such, I’m running for our HOA board with the intention of being a strong, outspoken voice for all of us. This past year, I took initiative by engaging directly with HOA leadership to address concerns about resident workspaces—an effort driven by my belief that we deserve environments that respect our labor and support our learning. My dedication to union values runs deep: my grandfather spent his entire career as a proud union sheet metal worker, instilling in me a lifelong respect for collective action and the power of solidarity. I will speak up and push for the changes we need, including easy access to MiChart and computers throughout the hospital, improvement in resident workspaces, and support for mental health. Better communication among residents through our HOA means better outcomes for our patients.
