2025 Robin Award
The 2025 Recipient of the Robin Tarter Award is Debra T. Hardemon.
This year's recipient of the Robin Tarter Award is Debra Hardemon—affectionately known to all of us as "Mama D." Mama D is not just a valued member of the ophthalmology team; she is the heart, soul, and guiding presence of our residency program.

From their very first day in the operating room at the VA, every ophthalmology resident quickly learns to look up to Mama D. Her calm and steady presence ensures that no matter how complex the case, how urgent the need, or how unexpected the equipment failure, there's always a solution—because Mama D is there. With many years of experience as an ophthalmic surgical technician, she brings unmatched expertise, foresight, and confidence to every procedure. Yet even more powerful than her technical mastery is her unwavering support and warmth—something that's especially vital for young surgeons finding their footing.
What truly sets Mama D apart, however, is her instinct to show up in ways we didn't even know we needed. She's the one answering our after-hours emergency calls, troubleshooting failing machines, and making sure there's a snack waiting for us after a marathon day in the OR. She's the one quietly handing us a better instrument mid-surgery before we even realize we need it. Even after my 200th cataract surgery, Mama D was there—offering pearls of wisdom and subtle technique refinements.
Here's what residents have shared about working with her:
"Mama D is the shining light of my entire residency experience."
"Mama D is the single most impactful person in my four years at Kellogg."
"Mama D is the spirit of the VA residents manifested."
"Mama D is hands down the most crucial element for beginner surgeons to feel comfortable in the OR."
For more than 15 years, Mama D has shaped generations of eye surgeons at the University of Michigan—not just through what she teaches us but through who she is. We are forever grateful.
The Robin Tarter Award is given annually to someone who positively impacts the lives of House Officers — especially advocating for or advancing House Officer rights or wellness.
When deciding the award, the Board pays close attention to unrewarded or invisible work of Michigan Medicine staff that improves the lives of House Officers.
