FAQ

Malpractice Insurance

How does malpractice insurance for House Officers work?

Occurrence-Based / Tail Coverage

The House Officer malpractice insurance coverage is occurrence based. That means a House Officer is covered for anything that happens while they are training at the University. Even if a House Officer is named in a suit three years after they complete training, the University will stand behind them.

Moonlighting

The House Officer malpractice insurance does not cover a House Officer when they are moonlighting.

Proof of Coverage

Each year, the employer makes available to the HOA a generic letter that acts as proof of liability/malpractice insurance for house officers training at Michigan Medicine. If you need proof of coverage when applying for a job or your own insurance, you can obtain it using our Medical Professional Liability Letter Tool.
