HOA Board Issues Letter in Support of UMMAP
The HOA Board sent a letter to hospital leadership in support of our union colleagues in UMMAP who are attempting to secure a first contract.
On 11/4/24, the Board Members of the HOA issued a letter to Dr. Runge and Dr, Miller, copied to the UM Board of Regents, in support of our colleagues in UMMAP/ AFT 6739 in their struggle for a fair contract. In it the Board asked that the hospital make movement at the bargaining table and offer fair proposals, that in the event of the strike the hospital reduce operations as much as possible to protect patient safety, and that Michigan Medicine does not ask HOA members to volunteer to cover for striking employees (also known as "scabbing").

Dr. Runge and Dr. Miller,
We, the elected Board members of the University of Michigan House Officers Association
(HOA)/ AFT 5158, write this letter in support of our union siblings in UMMAP/ AFT 6739, who
are in negotiations for their first contract. We are once again concerned that another group of our union siblings are not getting the type of fair wages and benefits they deserve and have decided to pursue a work stoppage. We support them in their efforts wholeheartedly. As we have stated before, the loss of any members of the care team is devastating to patient safety. Our UMMAP colleagues should be here, by our side, working under a contract that reflects the value they provide to this hospital. We hope their principled stand moves the hospital to make the type of proposals that will bring negotiations to a conclusion that will benefit all sides.
Our asks in the event of a work stoppage are the same, reduce operations to bare essentials to ensure proper care and patient safety. As before, we will be instructing our members not to volunteer to take any struck work and believe the hospital should, as before, instruct Departments not to offer any such work to our bargaining unit.
