As incoming president of House Officers Association, I am honored to represent this powerful labor force. This is a monumental year for our union as we negotiate our first contract since our affiliation with AFT-Michigan. AFT is a storied, formidable union with a record of unparalleled success in our state fighting for fair contracts for Michigan’s most valuable (yet least valued) workers.

Since our last round of contract negotiations, a lot has changed. Cost of living has skyrocketed. Patient volumes continue to increase, far outpacing the growth of our residency programs. The physical landscape of our medical campus is changing, creating new challenges for patient care. With these, and many other strains on our health care system, we as house officers are continuously treated as a perennial spring of infinite capacity.

We have been in touch with countless residents over the past year trying to understand your priorities and concerns, and we hear you loud and clear. You’re doing more work than ever, but struggling to make ends meet. You’re being nickel-and-dimed for necessities like parking and meals. You’re having to sit on the floor of your ICUs and use your own devices when the hospital fails to provide the most basic necessities to do your jobs.

You’re tired of the status quo and incremental changes, and we agree! The time has come for a radical reckoning with the value we bring to this health system. This year is our chance to fight for justice over exploitation.

But we can’t do this alone. We need your help!

  • Make your voices heard. Come to membership meetings, talk to your representatives, and make sure we’re fighting for what you care about
  • Get involved. There are going to a be a ton of ways to be part of our next round of contract negotiations. Get in touch and check your weekly newsletter to see how you can get involved.
  • Log your hours honestly. Show everyone how hard you’re really working!
  • Be loud and proud!! Make sure your co-residents and co-fellows are dues-paying members. Wear your lanyards and badge buddies and rep your union pride. These little things help us feel less alone.
  • Be kind to one another. Next time you’re about to get snippy with a consulting team, remember: that’s your comrade in arms! We are only strong if we stick together and respect one another.

We can do this if we stick together.

In solidarity,

Haley Marber, M.D., M.S.

As a rising third-year neurology resident, I have been proud to represent our collective voice serving on the HOA board for the past year. I am running for president-elect because of my commitment to representing our residents and strengthening the work of our board. My interest in organized labor began long before residency—my grandfather was a proud union sheet metal worker, and the importance of protecting the rights and dignity of workers was instilled in me early on. Over the past year, I have made it a priority to consistently attend board meetings and engage thoughtfully in discussions. I strive to foster an environment where ideas can be exchanged freely by asking questions and encouraging discussion. I am also comfortable engaging with hospital leadership during administrative meetings and advocating for the issues that matter most to residents. With an important bargaining year ahead, I look forward to supporting our president Haley and the rest of the board throughout the process. I am also excited to expand resident engagement through the Action Committee and to strengthen collaboration with other unions that are approaching their own negotiation cycles. Additionally, I have begun meeting with the president of UMMAP to build collaborative pathways for addressing issues affecting residents in the Pavilion, and I hope to continue strengthening these partnerships to better advocate for our trainees. Thanks for your consideration!

Vice President

Monica Chavan

Interventional & Diagnostic Radiology
HO3 » HO4

Hi everyone, I’m a rising 4th year interventional & diagnostic radiology resident. My training so far has included an intern year in general surgery and rotations throughout the institution including Mott, UH, CVC, the VA, and now the Pavilion. This means I have had a chance to experience many diverse workflows across Michigan Medicine – and I understand your pain when things are not running smoothly. I hope to bring that broad background knowledge of different units to the bargaining table as we go into a contract negotiation year. Over the last 12 months as an HOA Board member, I’ve also worked to build connections with our union partners at AFT Michigan and have been networking with other residents in unions across the country.

I am running to be your vice president because I think I can be an effective voice for you during negotiations and am eager to advocate on your behalf. Some of my top priorities for the next contract include: securing institutional laptops for all house officers, further addressing IT issues like the pager (de)transition & VA remote access, and expanding internal moonlighting opportunities. Please never hesitate to reach out to me via email/text or just stop me in the hallway – I am running to serve you and ensure your concerns are heard at the bargaining table. Thanks for taking the time to vote and to consider all of the candidates running to represent you on next year’s HOA Board.

Secretary

John Levine

Hello, my name is John Levine. I am running to be secretary of the HOA board because I am committed to action that improves our well-being and protects our rights as house officers. I have been an active union member for 8 years including serving this last year as a general board member. I will leverage my past experience as an exec board member in a grad worker union fighting tooth and nail for wins on segregated fee relief and paid parental leave that required a sustained effort building coalitions across campus towards the upcoming negotiations. I have learned to take nothing for granted from my experiences winning better working conditions and benefits. These are going to be tough negotiations, I look forward to building a strong coalition and energizing folks to be ready for the fight this bargaining year!

Treasurer

Sonali Biswas

Plastic Surgery
HO3 » HO4

As a rising fourth-year plastic surgery resident entering my research years, I am eager to continue advocating for our collective well-being and professional advancement by serving on the HOA Executive Board as Treasurer. Over the past year, my work on the Belonging, Community, and Health Equity Subcommittee has deepened my commitment to improving access, inclusion, and support for all housestaff, including expanding disability accommodations and promoting equitable workplace policies. Negotiations is an especially critical time for advocating for resident wellness, reproductive healthcare, and fair compensation.  With the flexibility and bandwidth that  research time affords, I am ready to dedicate the attention and energy needed for our upcoming contract efforts. As someone in the middle of training with multiple years to come, I have a strong personal and professional stake in ensuring that our negotiations lead to meaningful improvements in compensation, working conditions, and overall training experience. I would be honored to have your vote and the opportunity to continue advocating for the interests and well-being of all HOA members.

As the current HOA secretary, I am eager to continue in a board role within the HOA for what will now be my third and final year on the board. My past year on the HOA board has been a rewarding experience, allowing me to advocate for positive changes on behalf of my fellow residents. I am stepping down from the secretary to allow other board members to have a leadership opportunity. As a representative for next year, I plan to focus on strategic planning for the next round of contract negotiations, which are set to begin in 2027.

On a personal note, my enthusiasm for serving on the HOA stems from a deep appreciation for the principles of organized labor. Growing up, I learned firsthand about the importance of unions through my parents. My mother spent her career as an attorney for the National Labor Relations Board, a federal agency dedicated to protecting the rights of employees to organize and engage in union activities. My father was also a proud union member. They taught me the importance of workers being able to advocate for themselves collectively without fear of reprisal. Being able to join a union was one of the reasons I came here for residency, and I am continually impressed by the hard work and dedication of our HOA staff and my fellow board members.

Alexa Gabriele

Med-Peds
HO3 » HO4

Hello everyone! My name is Alexa Pinsky Gabriele, I'm a rising fourth year Internal Medicine-Pediatrics (Med-Peds) resident! I have been a board member for the past two years and I am seeking renomination for a third year on the board. With a seat at the bargaining table, I promise to be your voice to fight for enhanced benefits (pay, insurance etc) with a special interest in fighting for childcare options, accessible work stations/locations, hospital-issued laptops for all, and enhanced insurance options for costly medications (such as fertility-freezing medications, weight loss medications etc). As your representative for negotiations with our new contract on the horizon, I am excited to use the tools I have learned on the board for the past two years to help to advocate for our union members and help bring us into our new (and improved) contract for the generations of residents to come after me! Thanks for your consideration!

I chose this program due to its strong union, and I hope to be part of its continued strength. I aim to apply my previous experience in business and leadership to collective bargaining on behalf of my co-residents. I look forward to recommending a favorable new contract for our HOA.

I'm running for HOA board because I believe that if I'm going to complain about residency, I should also spend some time trying to make it better. As a Med-Peds resident, I'm constantly exposed to different services, teams, cultures, and ways of doing things. That cross-exposure has made me a better observer of which tangible actions actually promote resident wellbeing. I'd like to bring that perspective to the board and to GME administration. I'm committed to listening to fellow residents and doing the work to advocate meaningfully on our behalf.

Shreya Mandava

Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery
HO2 » HO3

My name is Shreya Mandava and I’m excited to be running for re-election as a UM HOA Board Representative. It has been incredibly rewarding to serve in this role and build connections with the current HOA Board team over the last 9 months.

I joined the HOA Board because I felt our negotiated protections, ranging from a livable salary to holiday pay to protected workspaces, were critical for trainee wellbeing. This year, I’ve gained a deeper understanding of the structural complexities of Michigan Medicine institutional leadership and have seen firsthand how decisions shape our day-to-day lives as trainees. It has been especially impactful serving as a voice for smaller surgical subspecialties like my own as we have navigated the transition from UH to the Pavilion Building. The shift introduced unique clinical and logistical challenges for trainees and I worked to ensure key concerns such as Blue Bucks access and emergency elevator availability were clearly raised and represented.

I am seeking re-election to continue building on this work and to continue supporting the needs of our current and future residents and fellows. As we enter a bargaining year, I am committed to advocating assertively on behalf of our trainees to strengthen workplace protections, improve well-being and working conditions, and ensure that the diverse needs of our trainee community are heard and meaningfully addressed.

With a background in corporate strategy at a Fortune 500 healthcare company, and experience serving as HOA Treasurer, Vice President, and a member of the negotiations team, I bring a proven track record of advocacy and leadership. As an HOA Representative, I will continue to fight for the rights and dignity of every resident. I will help steer our union through the complex, high-stakes decisions ahead as we prepare for contract renewal. A union gives us power—but even with that power, we are still undervalued. That’s why I won’t stop pushing until we get what we deserve—and more.

I care deeply about building a supportive community where our residents feel heard and represented. In addition to my particular passions, such as streamlined accommodations processes for the residents of U of M, I understand that individual residents will have personal desires from the HOA and I am dedicated to advocating for fair policies for all. I will encourage transparent decision-making and focus on achieving real improvements to our programs. I plan to be an active, reliable member who shows up consistently and collaborates respectfully while pushing for outcomes that benefit everyone!

Sudhu Srinivasan

Joining the union as a member PGY-1 year was pretty much a no-brainer for me, and I am grateful to have had the opportunity to serve as a representative-at-large on the HOA board from 2024-2025 and as treasurer from 2025-2026. As I enter my fifth and final year of training at Michigan now as a fellow, I look forward to using my understanding of this health system along with my experience in navigating inter-departmental and organizational logistics to contribute to the stability of the HOA during a bargaining year. I hope to use my knowledge of how we have interfaced with GME, the university board of directors, and various other parties to secure the best possible contract for our members. I look to ensure that there is consistent focus on all of us as residents. I am grateful to have benefited these past few years within our union and am excited to continue to serve our current and future colleagues!

I'm interested in being on the HOA board because I value interdisciplinary collaboration and the opportunity to work alongside and learn from other residents across a wide range of specialties. One of the things I enjoy the most about residency is the sense of community both in my program and with all residents in the hospital and feel that the HOA plays an essential role in fostering that environment. I feel very grateful to be training at a program that has such a strong HOA, securing salaries and benefits that are significantly stronger than my friends at other residency programs, and would find it meaningful to be a part of this bargaining process for the remaining years in my residency. Finally, as someone training in a predominantly outpatient clinical specialty, I hope to provide representation and perspective from that practice setting.
