2026 Robin Award

The 2026 Recipient of the Robin Tarter Award is Laura Simon.

On behalf of the plastic surgery residents, we are overjoyed that Laura Simon is this year’s recipient of the Robin Tarter award. Laura is a sustaining force of our division as the lead medical assistant in our Dominos Farms clinic. In a clinical environment that sees hundreds of patients each week, many with complex needs, from infants to older adults, she brings an extraordinary level of organization, consistency, and calm that allows the entire team to function effectively. The burden she takes on to anticipate patient needs (diagnostic testing, transportation, mobility, dressing changes) and attending preferences allow residents who rotate through quickly to focus on the clinical questions at hand. The patients frequently name her as one of the most helpful people in their care process because she thinks about their experience inside and outside of the clinic.

Laura’s impact extends far beyond her technical and organizational expertise. While she seamlessly coordinates the needs of over 20 attending plastic surgeons with distinct preferences, it is her human presence that  sets her apart. In a fast-moving and often overwhelming clinical space, Laura takes the time to connect with residents as individuals. She checks in after difficult clinical encounters, warns you about potential pitfalls, notices when you  seem down, and offers support and advice for months after. She treats residents like family, investing in our well-being in ways that often go unrecognized but are deeply felt.  It is the small, thoughtful gestures, like having a piece of gum or waiting to room a patient so a resident can eat lunch, that reflect her deep care for those around her. Whenever anyone in clinic feels lost, the solution is always, “Ask Laura.”

Laura embodies the spirit of the Robin Tarter Award through her unwavering commitment to the well-being of House Officers. She not only supports us in our work but actively enhances our learning experience, making a demanding environment more humane, connected, and sustainable. We  can think of no one more deserving of this recognition.

The Robin Tarter Award is given annually to someone who positively impacts the lives of House Officers — especially advocating for or advancing House Officer rights or wellness.

When deciding the award, the Board pays close attention to unrewarded or invisible work of Michigan Medicine staff that improves the lives of House Officers.
