  Dominic Barbato

  Director of Organizing and Representation

  Dominic came to HOA in December of 2022. He has been active in the labor movement since 2008 and has organized with AFSCME International, AFT Local 3550 (GEO), and was most recently a labor representative for SEIU Local 517M. He enjoys cooking, camping, mushroom hunting, and working a community garden plot with friends. When not working, he can often be found listening to the Grateful Dead and hanging out with his cat, Gazpacho.

  Steven Smith

  Director of Operations

  Steve has been involved with the HOA in various capacities for over a decade. Before that, Steve spent time in IT and web development – following his wife around the country as she completed medical school, residency, and fellowship. After spending 5 years in Pittsburgh the siren call of Michigan pulled him and his family home. Steve has two young children and a neurotic pup named Tino. On the rare occasion he is not working or tending to the children and/or dog, he enjoys a glass of rum and a good dinner with friends.

  As an affiliate with AFT-Michigan, all members of the U of M House Officers Association not only have Dominic, Steve, and the HOA Board working on their behalf, but they also have the full backing of AFT, AFT-Michigan, and the AFL-CIO. The AFT-Michigan field rep currently assigned to the HOA is Jon Curtiss.
