HOA and Hospital Come to Agreement on MI Care
House Officers who are currently enrolled in the closing MI Care health plan will receive a lump sum payment to cover the increase in premium for the first three months of 2026.
The House Officers Association has been in talks with the hospital about how to aid House Officers who are enrolled in the MI Care health plan that is closing at the end of this calendar year.
After a lot of discussion, the hospital and the HOA have agreed to the following:
- All House Officers currently enrolled in the MI Care Plan will receive a lump sum payment to cover the cost difference between MI Care and the UM Premier Care Plan (which is the most similar plan offered by UM).
- The cost difference will be calculated based on whatever coverage tier the House Officer is currently enrolled in (single, family, etc).
- The lump sum will cover three months worth of the difference in cost and will be paid on the January, 2026 paycheck.
The above settlement is very similar to the settlement the UMPNC was able to negotiate on behalf of the nurses earlier this year. While the closure of a healthcare plan is never easy and always has impacts, the HOA is happy to have been able to secure at least some financial relief for impacted residents and fellows.
